Derwent Reservoir to Lost Lad, Back Tor & Howden Edge

A few weeks ago, my good friend Dina and I embarked on a truly incredible walk, but be warned: it’s not for the faint of heart, especially in the snow! While the scenery was absolutely breathtaking, the challenging conditions made it an adventure for experienced hikers only.

Starting at Derwent Reservoir, the route involved traversing the moorland on barely-there paths, often obscured by deep snow and waist-high heather. It was a true test of endurance and navigation, but the sense of accomplishment and the stunning views made it all worthwhile. If you’re seeking a good workout and a rewarding challenge, this hike might be perfect for you. However, I highly recommend attempting this only on a clear, dry day and with proper preparation.

Would I recommend this winter walk? Absolutely, but only to experienced hikers who are well-prepared for challenging conditions. If you’re up for an adventure, this hike will reward you with stunning scenery and a true sense of accomplishment. Sharing this experience with Dina made it even more special!

Important Notes:

  • Parking: Be aware that parking at the overlook is now subject to a fee.
  • Refreshments: The cafe at Fairholmes is a great spot to grab a post-hike treat. It’s usually open most days, offering ice cream in the summer and hot drinks on colder days. It’s always a good idea to check their opening times beforehand, especially during the quieter months.
