Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District, is a hiker’s paradise. Its rugged beauty and challenging terrain offer a rewarding experience for those willing to put in the effort. This blog post details an epic 15-mile loop incorporating the dramatic Kinder Downfall, traversing the north face of Kinder, starting from Edale, ascending via the iconic Jacob’s Ladder, and returning via the notorious “7 Minute Crossing” and the picturesque Golden Clough. This extended route offers a more comprehensive exploration of the plateau and its surrounding valleys, with the added spectacle of the Downfall, correctly placed further along the Pennine Way.
Setting Out from Edale: The Gateway to Kinder: Edale, a charming village nestled in the Hope Valley, is the perfect starting point for exploring Kinder Scout. The village itself is worth a wander, with its quaint pubs and the renowned Edale Moorland Centre. Our adventure began at the car park (be sure to arrive early on weekends as it fills up quickly!), heading towards the well-signposted path leading initially towards Jacob’s Ladder.
Ascending via Jacob’s Ladder: A Stairway to the Summit: Our route first took us towards the iconic Jacob’s Ladder. This steep and winding stone staircase is a challenging but exhilarating climb. Don’t be fooled by its name; it’s more of a demanding ascent than a gentle stroll! Take your time, catch your breath, and enjoy the stunning views unfolding behind you as you gain altitude. The higher you climb, the more dramatic the landscape becomes.
Kinder’s Northern Plateau: The Trek to Kinder Downfall: Reaching the top of Jacob’s Ladder, we then began our trek out towards Kinder Downfall. The terrain is classic Kinder Scout – a mix of peat bogs, gritstone slabs, and heather moorland. Navigating the plateau can be tricky, especially in poor visibility, so a map and compass (or a reliable GPS device) are absolutely essential.
Kinder Downfall: A Cascade of Wonder: Finally, after a good few miles of hiking across the plateau, we reached the magnificent Kinder Downfall. This impressive waterfall, where the River Kinder plunges dramatically off the plateau, is a sight to behold. Depending on the recent weather, the Downfall can be a gentle trickle or a powerful cascade. The area surrounding the falls is equally stunning, with its rugged rock formations and panoramic views. It’s a great spot to take photos, have a well-deserved break, and appreciate the raw power of nature.
Continuing the Northern Plateau Exploration: From Kinder Downfall, our route continued along the northern and northwestern edges of the plateau. This section of the hike offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. Again, navigation skills are vital here, as the paths can be indistinct in places.
The Infamous 7 Minute Crossing: A Test of Nerve (and Footwear): After traversing a good portion of the northern plateau, we eventually reached the infamous “7 Minute Crossing.” This isn’t a timed challenge, but rather a notoriously boggy section that can take considerably longer than seven minutes to navigate, depending on conditions. Expect deep, sometimes hidden, pools of peat and slippery surfaces. Waterproof boots are a must, and trekking poles are highly recommended for stability.
Golden Clough: A Tranquil Descent: After the challenges of the 7 Minute Crossing, the descent through Golden Clough is a welcome relief. This beautiful clough offers a more gentle path back towards Edale. The scenery is stunning, with cascading streams, lush vegetation, and dramatic rock formations. It’s a perfect opportunity to catch your breath and reflect on the day’s adventure.

Tips for Hiking Kinder Scout (Especially for this Extended Route):
- Be prepared for all weather conditions:Â Kinder’s weather can change rapidly, even on a seemingly sunny day. Pack layers of clothing, waterproofs, and be prepared for wind and rain. Conditions on the plateau can be significantly different from those in the valley.
- Navigation is absolutely key:Â A map, compass, and/or GPS device are essential, especially for this longer route which involves traversing the plateau and potentially less well-defined paths. Know how to use them!
- Wear appropriate footwear:Â Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must, especially for the boggy sections. Consider gaiters to keep your socks dry.
- Pack plenty of food and water:Â This is a long hike (15 miles!), so it’s even more important to stay hydrated and energized. Consider packing extra snacks, a substantial lunch, and a hydration system (bladder or multiple water bottles).
- Let someone know your plans:Â Tell someone where you’re going, the specific route you’re taking (including the trek to Kinder Downfall), and when you expect to be back. Given the length and challenging nature of this hike, providing detailed information is crucial.
- Be mindful of the environment:Â Leave no trace and respect the natural beauty of Kinder Scout. Stick to established paths where possible to minimize erosion.
- Start early:Â For a 15-mile hike, especially one involving challenging terrain and navigation, starting early in the day is absolutely crucial to ensure you have enough daylight. Be realistic about how long the hike will take you.
- Consider trekking poles:Â These will be invaluable for navigating the bogs, uneven terrain, and descents.
